About this ledger

The Gauge and Grain is an independent editorial ledger on craft beer festivals and the rail lines that reach them. It is written for the person who has bought a ticket, looked at a list of forty pours they do not recognise, and then looked at the timetable for the last train home.

This ledger is not a brewery, not a festival organiser, not a ticket office and not an office of tourism.

What an entry contains

Each entry takes exactly one question about a festival, a pour or the journey to it. The answer comes first, in the opening paragraphs, before any background. What follows is written so a reader can jump to the part they need: what the rule is, what to check, what is normal and what is not.

The sources are named at the end of the entry. They are the published timetables, the festival documents that are made public, the safety and responsible-service literature, and the brewing references that describe a style in measurable terms. Where a source does not settle a question, the entry says so instead of guessing.

The number and the date

An entry is numbered inside its section, so a reference such as BF-002 belongs to the second entry filed under the festival. It is dated with the day it was last checked, not the day it was first written. That date orders the front page, dates the entry in the feed and appears in the sitemap.
